Duterte believes all ‘qualified’ Filpinos should have a gun: 'It’s better to be prepared'

We need more armed civilians- President Duterte
It is better to be armed than defenseless. This is what President Rodrigo Duterte believes and he considers that all ‘qualified’ Filipinos should own a gun.

In his speech on the 25th Association of Firearms and Ammunition Dealers of the Philippines (AFAD) Convention in Davao City last May 19, 2017, the President said, “I’ve (been) telling everybody. It’s better na may armas ka, practice ka lang sandali. And if you do not need it, fine. It should…everlasting credit to you. Ang mahirap ‘yung kailangan mo tapos wala ka.”

The president added that if a civilian is qualified to have a gun, then he must get a gun.

He also stated that there were numerous loose fire arms in the the possession of those who were not qualified to have one.

“It’s better to be prepared. Huwag na masyado sa labas baka makatakbo ka pa. Ang problema when you are invaded, when there’s an invasion in your house and you have to protect your family,” Pres. Duterte said.

“Kailangan maraming armas dito sa Pilipinas. So at this level now, it’s a bit dangerous to… sabihin mo it’s more dangerous to be not without a firearm,” he added.

President Duterte emphasized that there is a need for the qualified individuals to own a gun, especially in now that the situation is very dangerous, very dangerous not to own a firearm. On the other hand, the president discouraged to own a lot of gun because owning a lot may also cause danger, as he said, “There’s always that odd of it, the odds of increasing the danger.”

President was too eager to take a glimpse on the firearms and ammunitions put on display. He jokingly said that he went there for the  exhibit of firearms. In the end, he acknowledged the hosts of the programs and excused himself.

President Duterte was known to be fond of collecting firearms.
